DeleteThe overall purpose of your article relates to the article I had. Students achievements are something that I feel would highly motivate them. The achievement that your article is focusing on would be something that I would believe would be beneficial to students intrinsic motivation that my article focused on. The more that a student achieves in activities in class the more they would be motivated to continue trying.

This article seems like it would be interesting and beneficiary for all aspiring and current educators to read. It also might be helpful if parents also read it so that they could all be on one accord with the student's best interest at heart. Even though educators play a great role in helping students become interested in different topics, it also equally important that they be intrinsically motivated. I would be interested to read this article to see what the different effects of activity might include.
DeleteYou've definitely got a good handle on the intended audience for an article of this type. When looking at intended audience it is always a good clue to look at the kind of language being used. In specific disciplines, like Education, there is terminology that is commonly used among educators, that might seem like jargon to a casual reader.
DeleteYou have a very good understanding of the article that we picked out. The intended audience will reach a lot of people and could be used to change the way we look at students motivation. I think student motivation is very important and should be discussed more often that it is.
DeleteThe overall purpose of this article is to explain the ways that grades may affect the motivation of students. It was explained that initially it was believed that negative grades negatively impacted students intrinsic motivation, leading them to fall into getting worse grades. The study found that grades only weakly impact motivation. Intrinsic motivation is extremely high in elementary grade students. The intended audience of this article would be educators and those who are working with students in the field.

DeleteArticle Title - Math grades and intrinsic motivation in elementary school: A longitudinal investigation of their association.
Many students are constantly stressed out during the school year because of their current or future grades in their class. It makes sense to me that students doing poorly on tests would result in these students lacking motivation to learn. They never see any positive outcomes from their effort, so over time they are going to care less and less. This results in a lack of motivation that ends in dropping out of school for a lot of students. -CC
DeleteHi Allan, Your article sounds like a great read because I would agree that, "negative grades negatively impacted students intrinsic motivation, leading them to fall into getting worse grades". I can't wait until your group does your presentation so that I can see the results from this study. -SW
DeleteYour assessment that it is for educators working in the field is right on target. Your take on the primary research question is on target as well. The article discusses the "impact of grades" on intrinsic motivation. What topics do you see presented here for further study?
DeleteOne of the topics discussed in our article deals with how teacher enthusiasm directly relates to student engagement in classroom activities. The more excited and energetic the teacher is when giving instruction or modeling an activity, the more likely the students are to be intrinsically motivated to do well during the instruction/activity. A healthy classroom environment revolves around positive interactions between student and teacher, which can only occur when teachers are engagaging with students on their level. -CC

This sounds like a really interesting article! Thinking about it now, the teachers I had who were really enthusiastic made me excited for their class. Yet the teachers who lacked that motivation and excitement made me not want to attend that class. I think attitudes are very contagious which is why it’s so important to be enthusiastic around our students and show them how much fun learning can be!
DeleteA teachers overall perspective and enthusiasm when introduces a topic plays a tremendous role on how the students perceive it. With everything you do, it is important to always give 100 percent because your students are smart and know when you are pretending. Education is the key to life and one of the best tools for success. More teachers should take this into consideration when teaching even the smallest of lessons to always give it their best.
DeleteSo one of the primary questions seems to be: "what motivates students?" What are some of the benefits of activity based learning? You are all participating in an "activity based" learning activity as part of this blog. What are the differences between something like this, which can be somewhat self paced, and a lecture based class, in your experiences?
DeleteArticle: Math grades and intrinsic motivation in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteThis article mainly talks about how it was believed negative grades affected students motivation in a negative way. Yet after more studies were conducted, it was found that as kids got older, the intrinsic motivation became weaker. The article focuses on finding out why the learning motivation becomes weaker and weaker and also what ways can we find in order to reactivate this motivation for older students.

What do they propose? What further research questions are they being led towards at the end of the study?
DeleteThe article, "Math grades and intrinsic motivation in elementary school" investigated the connection between students level of internal motivation being lowered and the timeframe of grades being introduced. When students first start school, they are usually highly intrinsically motivated and this usually drops as the child gets older. After the data was collected, it was concluded that students are not highly intrinsically affected once grades are introduced.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great and concise summary of the main points of the article.
DeleteThe kinds of material and sources presented in this article were Pre-Test and Post-Test. They also used specially designed worksheets for the students to fill out based on motivation. Then T-Test were used to analyze the data of the students.
